How to Replace the Battery in an HP Laptop

Depending on how often you used your HP laptop battery and how well it was cared for, it will last between one and two years. Over time, you'll notice that its overall capacity begins to decrease, so that you'll need to purchase a replacement. Replacing the HP laptop battery isn't difficult, but you must select the right type of battery for your laptop model. All laptop batteries are not created equal, and installing the incorrect battery can damage your computer.




Determine the correct type of battery for your HP laptop. To do this, open the battery compartment on your laptop to find the make and model number on your current battery, or visit the HP website and type in the model number of your HP computer. In the online HP Parts Store, you can search for parts by entering the part number, the serial number or the product's number or name. Available products can be ordered directly from HP.




Turn off your laptop computer when you're ready to change the battery.




Turn your laptop over so the underside is facing upward. This will give you access to the battery compartment. Remove the battery compartment cover to access the internal battery. There will likely be a switch to unlock the compartment that you need to move prior to accessing the compartment.




Remove the old hp laptop battery.




Put the new battery into your HP laptop, being careful to insert the new battery in the same configuration as the old battery was inserted. Once the battery is installed, replace the battery compartment cover.




Connect your computer to its AC adapter to charge the new battery fully prior to use. The length of time it takes to charge varies depending on the type of battery and how much of a charge it currently holds. When the "battery charging" button on your laptop turns off, the charge is complete.




Press the power button on your HP laptop to turn it on.
